The story behind Lisbeyond’s ‘Gaivota’

Were you ever curious about the story behind our Gaivota (Portuguese for Seagull)? We often get questions about our logo. So it is time we tell you more about the story behind it. In this article you will read all about the creative process our designer, Joana Santos, went through, to develop Lisbeyond’s logo.

Lisbeyond’s logo, the beloved Gaivota, is a visual representation of the city where the company was born: Lisbon. When Joana started working on the design of the logo she gathered various elements that were typical for Lisbon.

And what would be a better fit than a seagull? Seagulls have been a part of the city’s landscape for as long as we can remember, due to its proximity to the Tejo River and the Atlantic Ocean, decorating its skyline every day again.

Other references to Lisbon can be found in the colours of the logo: mustard yellow, brown and white. The same colours you can find on Lisbon’s famous trams!

The logo was not created overnight. Joana shares that during the design process, she created more than 10 seagulls until she perfected the logo we know as Lisbeyond’s image today.

Lisbeyond’s seagull transformations

Joana tells us that the goals of this logo were to be easily recognizable, and also that it could be adapted during the evolution of the Lisbeyond brand. Any new business developments still had to match with the logo.

The seagull appeared to be a great outcome for this, transforming from the regular seagull, into a constructions seagull, chef seagull and much more.

See the transformations of our Gaivota here:

As you can see, our seagull keeps transforming, just as our company does. We are looking forward to seeing which seagulls will still be designed by Joana in the future!
